The Situation

In two separate projects, one for Microsoft US and one for Deloitte China, each needed an online learning experience for distributed teams, to improve teamwork, communication and also problem-solving and decision-making skills.

The Task

In each case, ‘Evivve’ was agreed with the business as an appropriate solution. Evivve is a co-operative digital learning game played in groups of up to 12. As a licensed facilitator of Evivve who had facilitated the game effectively before, Terry was asked to be one of the facilitators on each of these two high-profile projects. This meant taking charge of that group and briefing them on the game, facilitating its smooth running, debriefing to bring out the learning, and working throughout to co-ordinate with the other facilitators and the project lead.

The Action / Approach

I took charge of a group and briefed them on the game, facilitated its smooth running, debriefed to bring out the learning, and worked throughout to co-ordinate with the other facilitators and the project lead, including:

  • Problem-solving when there were difficulties in the brief (including language barriers with Deloitte China)
  • Observing carefully during the game to plan the debrief and maximise learning takeaway
  • Debriefing in a way that empowered learners to reach their own conclusions, but brought out the main events and learning points

The Result

We improved teamwork, communication, and problem-solving and decision-making skills:

  • Learners and client-side project leads in both cases gave excellent verbal feedback and rated enjoyment, learning and transferability highly
  • Teams were communicating better by the end, and in several cases identified barriers to work on
  • Teams identified learning points around problem-solving, cross-team working and communication, to use in their daily work
