The Situation

When Israel invaded Lebanon in 2006, most had not seen it coming. a major British Pharma company had had their executive conference in Beirut the week before with over 200 of their senior most business leaders there. Many travellers had seen Lebanon and Beiruit as a safe and once more flourishing holiday destination in the middle east . The UK Government needed a team to coordinate evacuation of British Subjects from Lebanon in the 2006 war.

The Task

I was asked on a Friday evening if i would rapidly deploy as part of the coordination team to either Limasol in Cyprus for the Uk Government or Damascus in Syria for our private clients.

I was part of a small team that was rapidly deployed to coordinate the evacuation of British subjects to Cyprus by the Foreign Office and working in partnership with the Army and Royal Navy. Coordinating medical care, triaging and onward evacuation. We completed the evacuation in less than a week.

The Action / Approach

  • Liaison and coordination with HM armed forces, the FCO Government of Cyprus, Other country evacuation teams of ISOS and Red Cross.
  • Command and Communication
  • Identification and prioritisation of medical needs
  • Identification and resourcing of assets

The Result

  • All British subjects were safely and successfully evacuated including two children staying with their Grandparents whilst on school holidays from the UK who were located within the main war zone in the Bekah valley.

  • As a result of the smooth and successful coordination of this, I received a formal written commendation from the Permanent Secretary of state at the Foreign Office for my role in rescuing British subjects from Lebanon .
