The Situation

Waitrose transformation programme had stalled, the incumbent transformation part, who lead the programme from inception to up the first transition phase had loss the confidence of the client. The programme was over budget and gone way past its original timeframe. Capgemini had already been awarded the operations support contract and through this initial engagement won the recovery programme contract and I was selected to lead the architecture work stream.

The Task

Waitrose needed all its suppliers and product lines migrated on to their new merchandise operations (MO) platform and the MO platform (Oracle, Blue Yonder, IBM, GCP) to be built out with further new functionality, circa £30 million business transformation.

The Action / Approach

As the Lead Architect for the MO programme, set up the programme architecture function with eleven solution architects, established the governance framework to ensure ongoing solution alignment to programme objectives.

The Result

Delivered programme blueprint, high level design, and 13 solution architectures over a 20-month period, aligned to 10 programme releases, resulting in the migration of 2400 suppliers and 30,000 product lines to the new platform; engaged in the selection and implementation of new demand forecasting (Blue Yonder), end-to-end integrated planning (Anaplan) and store inventory management (Trust) solutions, while supporting further work streams with the enablement of Oracle retail stock ledger, retail sales audit and their future integration into the corporate general ledger as part of a wider expansion of the existing MO suite.
