The Situation

I was asked to join the board of a WPP owned creative / digital agency as their Creative Services Director responsible for production and ways of working in the agency.

The Task

The goal was to establish new roles, tools and ways of working in the agency to improve agency performance.

The Action / Approach

I implemented a new people management schedule and approach, new project management tools, new forecasting tools, new timesheet system and new ways of working, I also hired in key new recruits and established clear roles and responsibilities. Key to success was nurturing a culture of engaged people, delivery and achievement using Design Thinking approaches to overcome resistance and drive adoption.

The Result

My actions resulted in a double digit improvement on the bottom line and I was promoted to jointly head up the Agency with the Creative director as joint Managing Partners. Together we then went onto triple the size of the agency under a ‘Thinking Human’ and ‘Collaborative working’ proposition, grow revenue to circa. £1m revenue per month, win an agency of the year award, multiple creative awards and a CPD Gold from the IPA for the training and development of our staff. We were recognised in the Top 10 UK agencies by Campaign Magazine in 2007. By driving a culture of innovation it allowed for easier and faster adoption of new digital trends, more satisfied and engaged employees, increased retention and productivity and agility of the business. Ultimately I managed to turn the business from making a loss to delivering c. £1m pbt.
