Digital Transformation at University of Manchester
The Situation
Students and staff have high expectations of the technology that the university should provide. The reality was often disappointing. In particular, students had much better technology on their phones than the university was providing and staff costs were high through poor process and manual activity.
The Task
New, improved services were needed for both students and staff which would provide better, more accessible, personalised information and allow for a much greater degree of self-service.
The Action / Approach
An extensive Discovery phase was executed, involving key stakeholders from around the university, to agree a set of priority Use cases to form the scope of 2 parallel projects – one each for students and staff.
Business Cases for these projects were then drawn up, funding secured and the projects delivered.
The Result
For staff, the MyView HR service was implemented which provided a much improved self-service and reduced costs for the Employee Lifecycle in areas such as Expenses and Recruitment. Excel4Apps was also implemented for much improved reporting.
For students, a new MyManchester service was implemented which introduced 8 new personalised services including MyProfile, Library Services, Timetable and Personalised Resource Bank.
These projects were delivered introducing, for the first time, the Agile methodology to the university.
