Coach & Mentor to Children in Care
The Situation
Working in partnership with Children’s Social Care and Adult Social Care helped to integrate Children in Care into the workplace for work experience and potential apprenticeships.
The Task
To identify potential young adults to take part in work experience activities and to design suitable coaching/mentoring material for their learning and development, to prepare them for integration into the working environment. The majority had come from a background of abuse/drugs/alcoholism which required me to be patient, understanding and earn their trust.
The Action / Approach
- Mentored on self-care and how to prepare for the workplace.
- Developed Learning and Development material to prepare the individual for the workplace.
- Identified volunteers across the organisation with experience to ‘match’ individuals with suitable ‘buddies’.
- Prepared a planned schedule of activities for their time with the organisation.
- Organised workplace tours and departmental work experience.
- Provided feedback reports on progress.
- Mentored and coached on preparation for interviews.
- Identified potential placements and ‘matched’ candidates to suitable roles.
The Result
- Improved confidence of 10 individuals.
- Provided work experience placements for 10 Children in Care across the Organisation.
- Placed 5 Children in Care in Apprenticeships with the Organisation.
- One of the Children in Care I personally mentioned went on to win an award as ‘Apprentice of the Year’, which was a very proud moment for us both.
- The success resulted in an on-going annual programme.
