Transforming and Simplifying Technology Across a Multi-Brand Retail Group
The Situation
A major multi-brand e-commerce group had a fragmented technology estate with brands operating separate platforms, systems and technology teams. The business needed to radically simplify its technology landscape and operating model while materially reducing its cost base and maintaining business critical operations across £bn scale e-commerce.
The Task
As Group CIO, accountable for technology across engineering, data, security, infrastructure and operations, I was responsible for defining and delivering a major group wide transformation. Consolidating technology across brands, creating a significantly leaner operating model and reducing cost without compromising critical business capability.
The Action / Approach
Led the consolidation of technology across the group, including migration of brands towards a shared digital marketplace and common platform architecture. Restructured the technology organisation from approximately 500 to 100 people, consolidating previously duplicated brand capabilities into a group model. Rationalised suppliers and platforms, modernised core systems and established multi cloud strategy across AWS, GCP and Azure while strengthening governance, cybersecurity and operational resilience.
The Result
Restructured and consolidated a fragmented multi-brand technology organisation, reducing headcount from c.500 to c.100 as part of a wider transformation delivering tens of millions of pounds of annualised savings.
