The Situation

The Client delivers a shared pathology service across 5x NHS Trusts. The digital workflows across the network all flow through a single integration engine. That engine was significantly out of date at hardware and software and prone to repeated service outages directly impacting patient care. The issue was flagged as the highest impact on the enterprise risk register but the organisation were repeatedly unable to find the right resource and approach to address it.

The Task

When we became available at the beginning of this year, the Client asked whether we would take this on.  We recognised the complexity and sensitivity of the requirement, but also quickly ascertained the depth of knowledge and expertise within the lead vendor.

The Action / Approach

Ultimately there were opposing views on the size of the problem.   The client, predominantly from a clinical operations perspective, were perpetually worried about the impact of attempting to change this part of their digital infrastructure; whereas the vendor, entirely from a systems perspective, were steadfastly clear on a viable systems upgrade path with minimal service disruption.   We grappled this dichotomy, focusing on stakeholder communications and incrementally moved the work forward to reach common ground across all parties.

The Result

The work has been successfully delivered and provides the Client with a solid foundation for growth across enterprise digital services.
