The Situation

A professional services business in the logistics sector experienced rapid growth after introducing a new service, attracting private equity investment. However, the IT function was misaligned with both existing and future business needs, creating operational inefficiencies and strategic gaps. The board required a structured IT review to realign technology with their five-year growth strategy and ensure IT could support the evolving business model.

The Task

The primary objectives were to:

  • Assess current and future IT requirements in line with business growth.
  • Evaluate different IT function models and recommend the most suitable approach.
  • Develop and implement an IT strategy that ensured scalability, efficiency, and cost control.
  • Guide the board in managing outsourced IT services effectively.

The Action / Approach

Working closely with the board, we conducted a strategic IT review to define business needs and assess viable IT operating models. Following board approval, I:

  • Developed a comprehensive IT strategy and roadmap.
  • Recommended an outsourced IT model, leveraging Microsoft 365 and Dynamics 365, to support a predominantly mobile workforce.
  • Designed a procurement framework for selecting a Managed Service Provider (MSP).
  • Issued the MSP framework to market, managed the selection process, and successfully onboarded the MSP with clear KPIs and service objectives.
  • Provided coaching and mentoring to the board, ensuring they could effectively manage the MSP and evaluate enterprise applications as part of ongoing business operations.

The Result

The IT function was successfully transformed:

  • The MSP took full responsibility for secure and cost-effective IT management, operating within budget and performance targets.
  • The CFO gained the ability to manage the MSP relationship, ensuring IT aligned with financial and operational goals.
  • Over time, as board capability increased, our role transitioned to strategic oversight, enabling them to independently source and implement Dynamics 365 to further enhance business operations.

This structured approach positioned the company for sustained growth, ensuring IT remained a key enabler of business success.
