Turning around an underperforming PMO team
The Situation
SHL’s Digital PMO team were being set up to fail; under-resourced, low on motivation and with ill-defined roles that were not appreciated by the wider organisation.
The Task
As the Head of Digital PMO, drew up a plan to re-focus and re-energise the team whilst clearly demonstrating their value add.
The Action / Approach
Led by example on select projects; used RACI to redefine the team’s role and transitioned away from project support to agile portfolio management; recruited a PMO manager to pick up admin tasks; assessed the team with an action plan for each member; established team OKRs to set goals and measure progress; re-balanced the team, recruiting in India and streamlining in the US; and set up team governance calls to improve communications and aid decision making.
The Result
Succeeded in transforming the team into highly effective portfolio managers, receiving strong feedback from stakeholders and with one of the lowest attrition rates (less than 10%) in SHL.
