The Situation

A leading FinTech business operating in the Foreign Currency/Payments industry, had grown organically and through acquisition to a scale where data and business intelligence were critical to the business’s future growth, however, business requirements had outgrown existing capabilities.

The Task

We were asked to identify the data and business intelligence issues within the business, then develop a data strategy and transformation roadmap to address them and support the clients ambitious product strategy and growth plans.

The Action / Approach

We delivered services across 3 different pillars of activity:

Review & Audit

  • Review of existing data capabilities, spanning people, process & technology, benchmarking the business against industry best practices
  • A parallel review of how the business used data to support its operations was carried out to identify areas where current capabilities were impacting business performance or there were opportunities to improve

Strategy & Roadmap

  • Developed a 3 year data & business intelligence strategy for the executive team
  • Devised a phased, business value based, change roadmap to deliver the strategy across people, process & technology capabilities
  • Built a business case and secured investment funding for the first phase of the change roadmap

Delivery

  • Developed and agreed the operating model and role profiles for a new ‘Data & BI’ team
  • Communicated the data strategy & change roadmap to key stakeholders across the client organisation
  • Led the recruitment of a new ‘Head of Data & BI’ to lead the new function

The Result

  • New data & BI team built to establish central capability to drive forwards the data strategy
  • Quick wins identified during the ‘Review & Audit’ phase delivered to ensure the largest revenue generating area of the business had the data it needed to manage performance and increase revenue
  • Existing staff brought into the new data & BI team to align and focus efforts and standardise working practices
  • These initial changes started a culture change journey with internal customers now asking for and specifying the data and BI they require – rather than assuming they would not be able to get what they needed!
  • The product roadmap is now data enabled with significantly improved insight across the product lifecycle
