The Situation

The UK Government decided to install fixed and mobile nuclear detectors at most Uk air and seaports, to counter potential threats. The government paid the bills and the port operators just had to cooperate.

The Task

Meet wiuth 6 port operators, explain what the Government wanted to do, get their agreement, and then lead a team to plan, design, install, test, commission and hand over the kit to the port staff.

The Action / Approach

I had to engage with 6 UK ports. Half of them were cooperative and put up no objections. But 3 of them were very opposed, because the detection portals (arches) may slow down the passenger flow rate through their customs halls. I had to arrange simulations, and even a dummy portal trial at an airport, before they agreed that this could go ahead at their port.

The Result

All 6 port installations were done within time and budget (£30m) and these items are still in use today.
