Head Architect, Systems Engineer and Technical Lead
The Situation
To design, develop and deliver through FDA approval a worlds first medical imaging product, against very challenging timescales, technological challenges across multiple engineering disciplines (mechanical, optical, electronics and software), and regulatory requirements.
The product consists of multiple never done before technologies, such a active eye tracking and ultra-wide OCT.
The team were struggling with the R&D as well as architectural challenges, particularly to integrate the product into the existing suite of products, whilst increasing the amount of re-use of technologies and software.
The Task
1. With the systems team, evaluating the operation of the system including hardware and software, devise solutions to problems found, prototype and prove solutions across the multiple engineering disciplines. Communicate the learnings to the rest of the team and to the new product development team.
2. Develop a new software architecture to allow the companies existing products and new products to move to a common software platform, reducing the duplication of development, and increasing the reuse and reliability of the systems, whilst providing greater scope for future products and features.
3. Lead the new product development team to deliver the production ready system through to final FDA approval.
The Action / Approach
Worked alongside the systems team and multiple engineering teams to understand, diagnose and resolve issues with the scanner. Provided prototype solutions, prove their acuity, document the solutions and communicate the learnings.
Lead the development of the new software architecture and technological roadmap to provide the base to develop the capture and control systems on.
Technically led the new product development team to deliver the system, with the new architecture in place, into and through the successful FDA approval process.
The Result
Delivered the new product into and through the successful FDA approval process.
Embedded the new architecture and roadmap into the company.
