Securing our data - Two Factor Authentication roll-out
The Situation
A global business handling sensitive personal data on behalf of its customers decided to further strengthen its IT security by rolling out Two Factor Authentication (2FA) to all employee laptops in recognition of the increased amount of home / remote working being performed following the COVID pandemic.
Over 800 devices in 10 countries (AMER, EMEA and APAC) needed to be secured.
The Task
I was asked by the Chief Human Resources Officer and Head of Information Security to build a project team, plan, and governance structure and to then monitor the program through to delivery.
The Action / Approach
I prepared a project Terms of Reference for approval by the Executive Sponsor and senior stakeholders.
I engaged with senior stakeholders (C-Suite and their direct reports) to identify individuals to be assigned to the project, ensure clarity of roles & responsibilities, and ensure that adequate time was assigned by them for this project. I then facilitated workshops to build a mutually agreed project plan with clear tasks, ownership, deliverables and timescale.
I maintained project governance documentation including the high level plan, meeting minutes, risk log, and executive reporting.
I facilitated risk reviews and decision making around edge cases where the selected solution was not appropriate.
The Result
Project delivered on time. Over 800 devices upgraded to require 2FA, providing the increased security required.
