Situation

The client, a large global financial institution was undertaking a transformation programme to significantly improve the performance of the IT Department. They were committed to moving to CMMI Level 3 within a 6 month period with an ambition to move to CMMI Level 5 within 2 years. There was additional requirement of ensuring the organisation achieved ISO9001 accreditation.

Task

Kevin was engaged and responsible for delivering the performance improvement expectations of the organisation as detailed below:

1. Develop and execute the Process Improvement Vision, Strategy & Roadmap
2. Recruit the team of internal assessors and ensure they are adequately trained
3. Create Strategic and Tactical Plans that detail how the organisation can significantly improve against the committed metrics and KPIs
4. Act as the Process Architect to ensure that the required changes do not compromise the underlying principles of the IT delivery function
5. Act as primary contact between the organisation and the CMMI Lead Assessor and understand his key drivers for achieving a successful CMMI assessment

Action
  • Conducted an initial assessment of the organisation to assess their capability against the CMMI Level 3 and ISO9001 accreditation requirements.
  • Created the Process Improvement Vision, Strategy & Roadmaps in a collaborative manner taking in inputs from staff across the organisation through a combination of interviews, workshops, and a review of existing documentation.
  • Made the required to changes within the organisation to deliver the improvements required covering the redesign of the organisation, the implementation of a Continuous Performance Improvement Programme and creation of a Supply & Demand Model incorporating a significant expansion of the offshore delivery channels
  • Managed the CMMI Assessment and ISO9001accreditation activities
  • Created the Roadmap for the organisation to move to CMMI Level
Results

As a result of the work undertaken as part of this assignment the organisation is now operating in the upper quartile of CMMI Level Organisations and is exhibiting many of the characteristics of Level 4 and 5 organisations, as determined by independent external assessment. The organisation also achieved their ISO9001 accreditation.

Specifically the organisation achieved:

  • A 7-fold decrease in the number of defects
  • An 8% improvement in Requirement stability
  • A 50% reduction to the cost of rework
  • A 25% increase in the use of offshore delivery channels with the resultant reduction in IT cost
  • A year-on-year productivity improvement rate of 44% over three years at 13% a year
  • A 17% reduction in the cost of IT per employee

Situation

The Finance Transformation Programme of a multi-national pharmaceutical organisation realised it would not be able to decommission two legacy applications, and therefore miss their cost-saving objectives, because a number of key reports, used by 300+ users worldwide, were not within the scope of the project.

Task
  • Create new reports in order to retire the legacy applications
  • Simplify and speed up the business process.
  • Deliver reports and improvements before the conclusion the main Finance Management Reporting transformation workstream.
Action
  • Held a series of workshops that addressed requirements.
  • Specified two new transactional reports to replace the 15 legacy reports. Report overviews:
    • Cost Report Key Info: A report with a set of standard fields which will be regularly incorporated into management packs such as the cost centre manager report or project management reports.
    • Cost Report All Info: A report that includes all available fields. Uses extensive filter criteria so users can pull data for specific needs.
  • Use agile techniques and processes to accelerate delivery.
Results

  1. Simplification: Two new reports replacing approximately 15 reports in the legacy applications. [any ideas of cost savings?]
  2. Near real-time reporting from when the data is entered/modified in the source SAP System. This results in users receiving the data 1 day earlier in the month-end process.
  3. Improved Performance as sample testing shows that the reports deliver around a 50% improvement in performance when compared to the legacy applications.
  4. Greater use of SAP functionality. The solution makes use of technology to access data from a single location that was previously accessed from the individual regional SAP systems.
  5. Enabler for the  retirement of the legacy applications post-delivery of the full Management Reporting solution

Using agile techniques the project was delivered in under 6 months, 3 months ahead of the required date. [did this result in a cost saving to the client, as in, reducing the project budget by over £XXXX.xx.]
