Writing something that people will read is hard. Writing something that people will read and learn from is even more challenging. It isn’t enough that you know what you’re subject. To encourage people to learn from you, you need to package your knowledge so readers can consume it—and perhaps even enjoy it as they read.

IT Industry analysts spend years perfecting the craft of writing for consumption. Writing is their product. They write to avoid saying the same thing over and over. They write a lot because people subscribe to their thinking, and only subscribers gain access to the best material.

HiveMind is a little different. We write to trigger the phone call. Our Insight Notes are not intended to be a business but to generate business. And generating business means demonstrating competency. HiveMind Insight Notes should demonstrate individual and collective competency—they should speak to the HiveMind business model as much as they speak to personal knowledge.

Search engines eat content for breakfast and tell people about what they ate by lunchtime. If we want our content to stand out, we not only need a regular volume of content, so search engines know we serve a good meal, but we need content that isn’t like everyone else’s. We want to be brilliant, creative, intriguing, perhaps even irritating—contrarian in a constructive way. We want people to link to our content, share out content, and comment on our content.

But most of all, we want potential clients to want more—to read an Insight Note, and ask for the next one. But unlike industry analysts, our next insight is still probably part of a learning experience. We want customers willing to learn with us.
