HiveEngage Session – ROI: The Risk of Inaction – When you can’t put a revenue number on it

We’re excited to invite you to an upcoming HiveEngage session with HiveMind expert Helen Beckford.

If you’ve ever watched an important initiative get deprioritised because it didn’t come with a revenue number, this session is for you.

Sales teams walk into prioritisation conversations with a revenue number. Operations, IT, HR and transformation teams often walk in with “we need to do this”, and more often than not, they lose.

Not because their initiatives are less important, but because nobody has clearly articulated what will happen if they don’t go ahead.

In her previous HiveEngage session, Helen introduced practical approaches to demand management. This session goes deeper into the point where the prioritisation argument is won or lost and the language that can change the outcome.

What We’ll Cover

Helen will introduce the Risk of Inaction framework: a practical method for articulating value when traditional ROI measures don’t apply.

  • Why operational, technology and transformation projects consistently lose out to commercial initiatives, and what to do about it
  • The leadership behaviours that derail prioritisation, from executives bypassing the process to priorities changing weekly
  • How to reframe “we need to do this” in language a CFO or board can evaluate
  • How to attach value to initiatives across IT, HR, operations and transformation that don’t have an obvious revenue number

Interactive Exercise

The second half of the session will be hands-on. Bring an initiative, yours or a client’s, that is stuck, has been deprioritised or is struggling to gain approval.

Helen will work through real examples live, helping participants reframe them using the Risk of Inaction method.

In Helen’s last session, one attendee brought an HR initiative that had been stalled for months because there was no clear ROI. By the end, they had the language they needed to make the case. This framework can work across any discipline where the value isn’t immediately obvious in revenue terms.

What You’ll Walk Away With

  • A repeatable method for articulating the risk of not doing something in language your CFO, board or client’s leadership team will understand
  • The opportunity to see real initiatives reframed using the method
  • Greater confidence to challenge prioritisation decisions rather than accepting the default
  • A practical framework you can use immediately in your own organisation or client work

Who This Is For

This session is for anyone who has lost a prioritisation argument to the loudest voice or the biggest revenue number, including COOs, CFOs, Heads of IT, PMO and programme leaders, transformation consultants, and anyone responsible for making the case for work that protects, sustains or scales a business.

🎤 Meet the Speaker – Helen Beckford

Helen Beckford is an IT Business Partner and consultant who has spent 15+ years working across 16 countries spanning EMEA, APAC, and the Americas. She specialises in prioritisation and governance for mid-market businesses, helping leadership teams decide what actually matters, build the structure to protect those decisions, and make sure the prioritised work gets delivered.

Her background includes IBM, Accenture, Dyson, and Elvie, where she led the technology prioritisation for the launch of an entirely new product category. She developed the Risk of Inaction framework after watching the same challenge repeat in every business she worked with: operational and transformation initiatives consistently losing to commercial projects, not because they were less important, but because nobody had the language to compete.

Helen holds PRINCE2, ITIL 4, BRMP, and CBRM certifications and has been recognised as a UK Finalist for Future CIO of the Year (2017) and an SAP UKI Customer Success Awards Finalist for Best Transformational Change Programme (2021).
